The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) sets down the rules and regulations to protect and secure sensitive patient data. It was signed into a bill by President Clinton in 1996. Under HIPAA, any company that deals with patient health information (PHI) must comply with all its provisions.
